This fun book really helps you to learn more about the lives of the hymn writers and makes it more interesting than just trying to memorize a list of names.
Christian Liberty Press (CLP) has a long-standing record with homeschoolers for delivering high-quality products. I personally have used and continue to use some of their books in our lessons.

We recently had the opportunity to review the first book in a series written by Douglas Bond and published by CLP, Mr. Pipes and the British Hymn Makers.
At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Hymn study is something we work into our lessons, but this book is listed as a textbook on their website. For most of our studies, we follow a Charlotte Mason style and prefer living books. Well, I was pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed this book. I wouldn’t consider it a textbook myself.
The story takes place as two teenagers, Annie and Drew, have come to England for the summer with their mother. While they are sure they will have a boring time, they are befriended by an elderly man called Mr. Pipes.
Mr. Pipes leads them on many adventures around their town as the children learn the history of many hymn writers including Charles Wesley, John Newton, William Cowper, and many others. Also along their journey, Annie and Drew learn about the values of traditional praise and worship, faith and friendships.
The book is written in story format making it an easy read and really pulled us in. It really helps you to learn more about the lives of the hymn writers and makes it more interesting than just trying to memorize a list of names.
The black and white illustrations throughout the book are just lovely and remind me of the 50’s style books. While this book was intended for use in grades 7 to 10, I think it would make for a wonderful family read aloud and this is how we used it.
If you would like to view a sample of the book, there is a Google preview on the CLP page here.
Mr. Pipes and the British Hymn Makers is 242 pages and available as a PDF download for $8.79 or in paperback for $9.89.
