Summer Reading Adventures For Girls

As I've mentioned before our family loves to read! I've been working on a list of books for my girls to read over the summer and to use as a family read-aloud. Hey, boys would enjoy many of these also.

A favourite around here is historical fiction and adventure stories. With our stuffed bookshelves and out new additions from last weeks library sale we have no shortage of reading material.

Books are fuel for creative ideas. They can take us around the world and back in time or into the future.

I've lost count of how many stories have been acted out in our yard. How many times the children have rearranged the living room to be a "set". How many nights they've begged for one more chapter because the story was just too good!

Our summer reading list:

Little House on the Prairie ~ I have the full series gifted to us many years ago. Our children love these stories and I do too! We'll read at least a few over the summer.

Dear Canada ~ This is a wonderful book series written in diary format telling the history of Canada. We really enjoy these stories!

Our Canadian Girl and American Girl ~ Similar to the Dear Canada series, but much smaller books. We picked up a number of these at the last library sale and are looking forward to reading these!

King of the Wind by Marguerite Henry ~ We've already started reading this one and it's becoming a favorite of my dd9. She loves horse stories! So much like me when I was her age.

Brighty of the Grand Canyon by Marguerite Henry ~ This is my copy I've had since I was young. Yes, I was/am a fan of Marguerite Henry's books!

Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls ~ This is another wonderful story that I've kept since I was a child. I have to admit this one made me cry when I first read it! I know my girls will love this story too.

An Island Story by H.E. Marshell ~ I love this history book and will be reading sections from the Middle Ages over the summer.

Understood Betsy by Dorothy Canfield Fisher ~ We've already started this book as well and we all are enjoying it. A story of a little girl who is overprotected and loved by her Aunts. When illness hits the family Betsy is sent to live with another Aunt whose family helps Betsy to learn to think and do for herself.

In addition to this list, I'm sure we will read lots of picture books with the younger set.  Many from the Before Five in a Row and Five in a Row are family favorites.

What is on your reading list for the summer?
