Seed Sowers: Gospel Planting Adventures ~ Review

This is a great book to share missionary stories with your children. It can be used as a self-study book or as we used it as a family read aloud.

We've recently had the wonderful opportunity to review the book Seed Sowers: Gospel Planting Adventures.

Seed Sowers was written by one of my fellow Schoolhouse Review Crew members Gwen Toliver at Seed Sowers.

Seed Sowers: Gospel Planting Adventures is an adventure book about missionaries that Gwen Toliver spent 2 years collecting and writing. How amazing is it that she was able to personally interview and record the stories of so many missionaries.

Seed Sowers: Gospel Planting Adventures is intended for children in grade 6 and higher to be read independently. However, if you're willing to answer the many questions that will come up, it makes a wonderful family read aloud book to include younger children with.

We decided to use this as a family read out aloud book. Sometimes I read it as part of our Bible time after breakfast and sometimes we save it for the evening. My hubby has really enjoyed this book so we like to wait for everyone to be here.

Each chapter focuses on one missionary and their story around the world. Some stories are happy, some are very sad but all are interesting adventures to read.

Some topics can be scary for very young children, but I found that ours handled them ok as long as we took the time to explain any questions they had.

Although sometimes the answer is just we don't know. We don't know why one missionary is saved from death while another is called home to the Lord. We can't always understand his timing.

One thing this book will give you an appreciation for is how very lucky we are to have Bibles available to us. Everyone in our home has their own Bible and we can easily buy more if we want to.

But what if you live in a country where you can't buy a Bible easily? What if the Bible has not been translated into your language?  Did you know there are about 7000 languages around the world and the Bible has only been translated into about 500 of these? That is a HUGE gap!

The Seed Sowers book is written in a conversational tone. This makes it so easy to connect to and for children to understand.

There are no photos in the book and our children loved using their imaginations to picture the areas and events that had happened. We often looked up countries on the map and pulled out one of our many geography books to learn more about an area.

However, the Seed Sowers has a lot of photos to go along with the stories on their website. This is a great place to see photos of the missionaries. This website also has some excerpts from the book and so much wonderful information to check out.

Our family has loved reading this book and I know this will be one that we read over and over again. I highly recommend this for your family's collection of missionary stories and inspiration.
