This past month I've had the opportunity to try out Math 911.
Math 911 is a math program for Windows that tutors your child in algebra, calculus, and trigonometry.
Math911 is for students who believe that Algebra must be a struggle, difficult and complicated. Math911 is the easiest and most economical solution for Algebra students. The Math911 approach is what learning Algebra should be: quick, fun, and easy. Math911 will let you absorb Algebra effortlessly. ~ Math 911
The Math 911 program is very basic in appearance and reminds me of the "old" 90's DOS programs I used to use. But this program is easy to use, and I like that it doesn't have a lot of flash to it.
Topics are arranged by chapter, section and levels. Within each level are all the types of problems that identify the concepts that your students must know in order to be successful in Algebra including Graphs and Word Problems.
All problems are algorithmically generated.10 minute learning curve.Step by Step solutions.Only Free-form answers.Dynamic Grade reports on all screens.Needs no internet connection. Can be networked.Free Home Use For TeachersFree UpgradesFree Install on New PCs

The main screen is open and uncluttered, from here you select what math course you want to work on. You can easily see what your score is.
Math911 is a mastery-based math program. As you work through the questions, if you get an answer wrong you have to keep trying that question until you get the right answer. A great feature is that you can click on "See Next Step" or "See All Steps" if you are having a hard time on a question.
It then shows you on the screen how to come to the correct answer. After you have entered it you can move on. Since the scores are only kept for correct answers I wouldn't use this as a "grade" but as a progress report.
Since my oldest child is just starting grade 5 and not yet ready for algebra, I have been using this program myself. It is a great refresher course to use.
I think this will get me easily up to speed for when I start teaching algebra in a few years. Algebra was always a course I enjoyed in school, it was one of the few math courses that made sense to me! Still, it's amazing how much you can forget over time.
This program uses no textbooks, everything is on screen. Math911 does have FREE PDF's to explain how math concepts work and a cartoon-style book for algebra. You can find links for these resources in the left sidebar of their website.
I would recommend this program to anyone looking for a no-frills, focused math program. If your children like just the facts without distracting colors and sounds this might work really well for them. But if your child, like some of mine, do better with video and audio instruction this might not be a good fit.
In addition to the Algebra course, it includes:
Intermediate Algebra Course (Algebra 2)
PreCalculus topics
Trigonometry topics
Introductory Statistics Course
