Our style of homeschooling has always been heavily influenced by the methods of Charlotte Mason. One of the core methods of a Charlotte Mason education is the use of copywork.
I try to have my children do copywork daily but sometimes I don’t have time to select high-quality passages from our literature for them to copy. So I was really looking forward to trying the Lifetime Membership to Homeschool Copywork.
What Is Copywork?
Copywork isn’t busy work and it’s not just handwriting practice either. Yes, copywork makes wonderful handwriting practice but there is much more to it than that! If you use copywork in the way that Charlotte Mason intended it to be done it is a wonderful tool for teaching handwriting, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary in a simple and integrated way.
Children can also learn many facts about literature, history, and science in their daily copywork exercises.
We do copywork in short lessons. During this time, each child has a selection to work on and they slowly work at copying the passage as correctly as possible. As they study the punctuation, spelling, and flow of the passage they learn so much.

Homeschool Copywork was started by Amy Blevins after she saw the wonderful results copywork had on her daughter. I’ve often said my favourite homeschool curriculums are ones that were created by homeschooling moms.

In each topic area, there are many copywork e-books available for different ages. You can easily filter what you're looking for at the top of your member admin area. There are buttons for Early Elementary Copywork, Upper Elementary Copywork, and Junior High - High School Copywork.
Clicking any of these will filter the selection list to show only the topics that might be of interest to that age group and have the right-sized writing lines.
I love that many of the copywork e-books have the same selections but in different line sizes. This makes it very easy to use 1 copywork book for children of different ages. One child might like to practice cursive writing, and another printing without line guides.
How We Use Homeschool Copywork
Transportation Copywork
Homeschool Copywork has become one of my most used homeschool resources! I love the quality of the copywork passages. They are all high-quality and interesting selections, no twaddle or busy work here!
When I first logged in I took a little time to read through the selection lists for each age range. Then I asked my children what topics they would like to work on for the next few weeks.

My 7 and 8-year-olds wanted to work on the transportation copywork book. This is a super cute alphabet book. Each letter of the alphabet is matched with a type of vehicle. So they would practice a sentence like A is for Airplane.
When they were finished they could colour in the picture. The illustrations have just enough detail to be interesting without being busy. It leaves lots of room for little artists to be creative!
John James Audubon Copywork Cover
My older 3 girls ages 10, 11, and 14 all wanted to work on the John James Audubon e-book. I was very glad they picked this one because we had just started our bird study. The John James Audubon copywork book is 191 pages long and includes 25 quotes.
Homeschool copywork
This is one of the books that include a range of line styles. You can choose to print the copywork as a lined print, lined D’Nealina, lined cursive, regular print, and regular cursive. It also includes extra pages you can print for copying the longer passages and beautiful bird illustrations on each page.
The Audubon e-book also has a matching coloring book you can download with larger images if your children enjoy coloring.
Features I Wished For
While the copywork is well organized by age level I do wish there a search feature so you could search the entire site for a topic. Right now I have to look through 3 lists to see if there is copywork on the same topic but for different age ranges.
I would also love it if there was a way to preview some pages of each unit before downloading the full one. Currently, the only way I could find to look at an e-book was to download it first.
I also wish that there were some Canadian copywork books! I’d love to have some copywork for Canadian poets, artists, and Prime Ministers.
None of these would stop me from using Homeschool Copywork.
What I Love About Homeschool Copywork
Homeschool Copywork has made my life easier! My goal has always been to do copywork daily with my children and there are many days that we do. However, it takes me quite a bit of time to go through all of our books to find great passages for them to work on. So if I’m having a busy week or sick it just doesn’t get done in the way that I want.
Now with my membership at Homeschool Copywork, it takes me only a few minutes to select an e-book, download it and print it off. Then we are ready to go! I can do this once a week or once a month or even daily if I like.
We’ve been really enjoying the John James Audubon copywork book. Next, I’m planning to work on some of the artists perhaps Monet or Van Gogh.
