Learn Foreign Languages In A Fun Immersive Way!

Do you teach your child a foreign language? I know it can be hard especially if you don’t easily speak more than one language yourself!

I can still clearly remember the French classes I took when I was in school. Growing up in Ontario we had French class lessons in the lower grades occasionally, maybe it was once a week.

I remember it was taught through fun songs mostly. Once I was in the higher grades we started having more formal French language lessons starting in grade 5. I took French every year from grade 5 to grade 9.

You know what?

I don’t remember a thing from it! Except that is how badly my French teachers spoke and understood the language themselves.

It wasn’t until I started studying the Acadian (French) side of my family and working through many old church and vital records all written in French that I began to pick up the language. Now don’t get me wrong, I still can’t speak French very well but I can read it a little.

What made the difference was I had a keen interest to learn what these words were saying, after all I was trying to learn about MY family! I was also learning in an immersive way.

The records were all in French, I had to figure out what the context was and what each word was saying.  Using translators like Google Translate helped me a little but often it would give the oddest translations.

So asking friends and family to help me understand the words started to open the language to me. Once I had a few words I could figure out the rest.

So what does this have to do with teaching a second language to my children? Well, I’ve come to believe that immersion learning is the best way to learn another language!
